The Chronicles of the Voluntarily Unemployed

Perhaps the title of this new blog is a bit of a misnomer. Currently I sit on the couch with an application to Starbucks resting 5 feet away on my coffee table. The idea of working at Starbucks appeals to me for the following reasons:

1. I’ll get to socialize with new people. Which brings with it the chance to hone an on-going life skill of being able to socialize with new people.

2. I like the way coffee smells. Call it ‘office aromatherapy’. I have a feeling that the burning smell of the photocopier toner at my last job wasn’t conducive to my well-being.

3. A sense of discipline. Shift work would require me to be more productive with my “spare” time. And I’m reluctant to discipline myself, which makes it all the more attractive (every rebellious person probably can relate).

4. An income. I am comfortable financially for now, but my innate fear of being *gasp* broke, destitute and having to take a loan from the Bank of Dad, or much much worse, settling for a full time job I don’t love, is a little fear that’s starting to move on up to the east side of my mind.

5. Working for a corporation that I respect. I’m sure there’s a million OpEd’s out there preaching how evil Starbucks is, but their marketing kicks ass and they have a huge social conscience…and they serve delectable coffee with a heavy foam experience on top. I can hear James Taylor’s velvety voice right now.

6. Celebrity Central. Yorkville is a hotbed for celebs, and they like Starbucks. I envision exchanging witty and engaging banter with James McAvoy while I make his Grande extra hot, extra foamy, soy caramel macciato. Crazier things have happened. To me.

So for these reasons, I will envision myself working as a Barrista and enjoying it. My friend told me about high powered CEO who gave up his job and decided to do the same thing and became a better person for it. Yes, a chance to better myself in an unlikely place. That sounds about right.
