The Chronicles of the Voluntarily Unemployed

If I had had a crystal ball this time last year to peer into my future life, I would’ve given it back because the scenes would be from a life that is obviously not mine. But alas, here I am, out of the professional corporate world, with 3 months of crazy backpacking stories, about to start a part-time dalliance at Starbucks (t minus 3 days), and tomorrow, I will be starting my first day of volunteering at Much Music.

After convincing myself (and being convinced by others) that it’s next to impossible to break into the entertainment industry, the clouds parted ways and the Gods shined to bring me some good fortune. And by Gods, I probably mean Oprah and her “if you dream it, it will come” attitude. It’s so true though eh? You just have to envision something for yourself, and if it’s meant to happen, that is, the ambition keep you on the path you are intended to be on, it will only serve to enrich your life. And right now, that means, if this gig turns out to be something I can sink my teeth into and learn from, FANTASTIC! If I try my best and see that it’s just not what I want to do, FANTASTIC! At least I know and can go back to pursuing a lucrative career in some sort of corporate gig, with a dental plan and benefits and…..zzzzz….sorry fell asleep for a second there…

My friend Brian has worked at the station for a while and I asked him a few weeks ago if there were any opportunities at Much (taking Fergie out for lunch, or to score a hit…things of that nature). He flipped me the addy of someone in the publicity department and I created a cover letter (a mock blog, which they loved!) and tweaked my resume. I went in to meet with the Senior Publicist today (I’m thinking she’s about 24), and we hit it off (thankfully my jokes about the cracked out/space cadet Fergie fell on her knowing ears :S). It’s an interesting opportunity because from the sounds of it, they are just drowning in work and I am prepared to roll up my sleeves and learn like a bright eyed Jewish girl who goes to the Catskills for a 3 week vacation with her parents only to meet and fall in love Johnny Castle and serve as his replacement dance partner because that creep Robbie knocked Penny up. God I hate that Robbie. Anyways, where was I….ah yes…I want to learn and marinate myself in the atmosphere. I have to admit that it was so cool to be there today. Not only did I see a whole whack of City celebs (Matt Babel, Laura DiBattista, and my fav Jo Jo Chinto), but everyone I talked to was very nice (the security guard is my new bff). The energy was absolutely frenetic, so many people coming and going and looking pissed off and busy and trendy and tired and self-important. Ahhh, I’m excited for tomorry!

In other news, I remember when I was little and thought that snow was angels shaking the dandruff out of their hair (much akin to thunder being angels bowling, and lightning being when Santa was trying to fix a shorted-out bulb). It’s been snowing something fierce all day. Do they not have Head & Shoulders in heaven?
