The Chronicles of the Voluntarily Unemployed

Today began my foray into the world of Much Music. My spirits were bright as I made my way to 299 Queen West, and I entered the building with a cup of coffee in one hand and my best foot forward.

As I waited in the lobby, I sneaked a peak at the Cityline episode taping in the front room- Marilyn Denis’ hair looks very glammerific in real life. There was a group of people from Rogers Media (can I help it if I can’t help hearing from where I’m eavesdropping?) waiting to enter for what I can only imagine was a high-falootin meeting, and for a moment, I missed high-falootin meetings of the corporate world. Jen (who is the Publicity Coordinator) came to receive me, and walked me through the labyrinth of a building where the energy was already at full tilt at 10am. We made it to the Publicity department where I met Zach, the Intern for the youth division, and John, an Intern for the Space channel. In my 7 months of self-discovery, I sometimes need to remind myself of the things I enjoy work, and the sarcastic comments of co-workers has to be near the top. The day flew by with the boys, reminiscing on the brilliance of Perfect Strangers (BALKI!) and sharing notes over lunch on the our most memorable celeb encounters – Zach’s account of doing tequila shots with Robin Williams has to take the cake. And I caught a glimpse of Jeannie Becker shooting a show. And I stood behind that brownish guy who’s on ETalk at Subway. And a couple of the VJ’s. No Jo Jo Chintoh today.

But right, back to work- I spent the day putting together a publications listing for Zach. Which may or may not be used to contact Randy Jackson to promote his new Dance-off show. Which is a phone conversation I imagine as such:

Much Publicity: Hi Mr. Jackson, we’d like to promote your new show and pitch it to Funky Dance-Off Weekly, which is read by every key demographic in Canada, although we never knew about it before, but our new fabulous Wednesday volunteer Nelu scoured the web to find it. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack really.

Randy: Yo dawg, YEAH YEAH, that’s what I’m talking bout, Yo I’m down…tell that girl she is the BOMB DAWG! You need to hire her!

Okay, so my road to the top may not be this easy, but day 1 was a cool experience. I will go back next week for day 2, and asked Jen if we could have lunch so that I can do that networking thing that’s oh so important in this day and age.
