I had no idea that I would wake up this morning to discover the world had changed (and not like it changes everyday, in a more profound, nostalgic effect on myself). Polaroid will no longer produce its Instant Film cameras or film as of 2009.
In 2001, I purchased my one and only Polaroid camera- a fun iZone that produced thumbnail sized photos on sticker-back film. I remember the film being expensive on a per picture basis (about $15 for a 12 pic roll) and out of the roll, I probably could get 8 or 9 tangible photos- I sometimes forgot that I had to nimbly yank out the film after taking a picture…it was an issue wiht timing and amount of force that ruined some of the attempts. But that 75% yield rate did provide me with some fun pictures of friends and family on a 1 inch x 2 inch canvas that I carried around in my keychain photo album. It was a fun toy for a year, then like so many toys left in the closet, I found something else to adore. But it was a fun little thing while it lasted.
So let’s all recall our own personal and public memories of this cultural icon:
Always remember the Polaroid pics used to remember in Memento, remember?
Shaking it like a Polaroid picture like Andre 3000 told us to.
And of course, this video. This type of cross-promotion is the stuff of legends.
